Calgary’s Most Visible Bird

Black-billed Magpie

With all of Calgary’s great green spaces and natural areas, we have birds everywhere! What do you think is the species seen most often in the city?

We have many species here year-round, and some summer visitors arrive in huge numbers, such as American Robins.

Some suggestions for permanent residents might be Black-billed Magpie, House Sparrow, Black-capped Chickadee, Canada Goose, Mallard, House Finch…

Let us know what you think, and why you’ve chosen that species. Join our 2010 Birding Event to help answer this question!

We look forward to hearing from you in the comments below!

  1. Although there seems to be thousands of Canada geese in the city, I think I would have to go with the House Sparrow as being our most common bird. They’re smaller, and fit everywhere!

  2. I would say that the House Finch is rapidly colonizing
many areas of the city, and is slowly taking over from
the House Sparrow in many residential areas of the
city, especially where there is regular bird feeding
    being done.

  3. Although there are probably more House Sparrows, I think the species seen the most in Calgary is the Black-Billed Magpie. They are in every type of habitat and with their large size and distinctive colouration, they are hard to miss!

    • Not to mention their considerable vocal talents – they’re impossible to miss when they’re chatting to each other!
