Hawk Identification

This beauty was visiting the Farmer’s Market in SE Calgary today. Anyone want to take a shot at identification? Leave us a comment below with your best guess!

  1. The lighting isn’t terrific, but of what the photograph portrays, I’d have to assume a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk. The breast pattern, the brown tail (no red feathers in juvenile) and the head match a young red-tailed’s profile.

    • Well done Oggie. Juvenile Swainson’s hawk it is. There were four of them cruising the market, but this one sat still long enough for me to take a quick picture.

    • Thanks for your comment! This is actually a juvenile Swainson’s hawk. There were four of them cruising the market that day, but this one posed nicely.
